Located within Malta International Airport, Skyparks is a multi layered mixed-use complex that brings together office, commercial, and hotel functions. Designed on a 4600 m² plot, the project forms part of a larger masterplan and reflects an integrated architectural approach focusing on urban connectivity, airport access, and user experience.
Architectural Organization and Urban Connectivity
The design began with pedestrian axes that connect directly to the airport. These axes are supported by green bands that prioritize public use and ensure integration with the surroundings. The massing strategy directs the prevailing western winds around the buildings to enable passive ventilation, while open passages between blocks support air circulation.
Architectural Form and Mass Strategies
The project’s volumes are gradually elevated, rotated, and spaced to optimize natural ventilation and daylight access. The horizontal block that houses offices and commercial spaces features a shading canopy above sunlit upper levels, and an interior atrium that maximizes daylight. Vertical gardens on the glazed façades provide additional shading. In the circular block with hotel and office functions, horizontal balconies ensure effective solar control.
Sustainability and Energy Efficiency
From the outset, Skyparks has been developed to meet BREEAM “Very Good” certification standards. Green roofs, rainwater harvesting systems, and permeable ground surfaces help optimize greywater use. Angled window systems and shading panels provide effective solar control, while all timber elements are sourced sustainably. All water systems comply with Malta’s local environmental regulations.
Façade Design and Visual Comfort
The façade material palette features locally sourced Malta stone, certified timber, and carefully balanced glazing. A double skin façade enhances both aesthetics and climatic comfort. Vertical louvers provide protection against morning and evening sun, and the shifting floor plates and terrace uses enrich the building’s silhouette.
Comprehensive Functional Program
The 24,812 m² construction area includes a well balanced distribution of commercial units, office spaces, and hotel rooms. Office zones are oriented toward views and use green terraces for daylight control. Hotel rooms are positioned on upper floors with distinct entrance arrangements. At ground level, retail units are permeably integrated with public spaces, while rest and event areas are designed with water features.
The Skyparks Project contributes significant architectural and environmental value to Malta International Airport and its surroundings through its integration of design, sustainability, functionality, and environmental sensitivity.
