Positioned at the crossroads of memory and renewal, Adıyaman Mosque Square stands as a central node in the city’s post-earthquake restructuring. Located along Atatürk Boulevard—Adıyaman’s primary commercial and transit axis—the project transforms the open landscape surrounding the newly constructed Central Mosque into a dynamic, inclusive public space.

A Pedestrian-Centered Urban Fabric

Following the earthquake, vehicle dominant axes that previously fragmented pedestrian circulation were repurposed into continuous walkable corridors. One of the most critical interventions involved redirecting the underground parking access to Atatürk Boulevard, thereby enabling the creation of a central plaza at the convergence of major pedestrian routes. This plaza becomes a connective tissue between the urban park, the mosque, and historical landmarks such as the Adıyaman Castle and Ulu Mosque.

Modular Trade Units and Flexible Urban Programs

To restore economic vibrancy, the square is encircled by modular trade units designed with lightweight steel structures. These modules are organized as A and B types, allowing different configurations for uses ranging from spice markets and goldsmiths to crafts and garment vendors. The modular system enables flexible layout combinations, incorporating courtyards, balconies, and shading canopies that respond to both climatic and spatial needs. The result is a commercial spine that supports local livelihoods while remaining adaptable to future demands.

Cultural Continuity and Urban Memory

The new Central Mosque—built to replace the one damaged in the earthquake—functions both as a place of worship and a potential emergency shelter. Its surrounding landscape is carefully reimagined to preserve green continuity and spatial coherence. Adjacent to the square are three distinct public zones:
Memorial Square, where a destroyed hotel once stood, now honors lives lost in the disaster.
Ceremonial Plaza, positioned between the mosque and park, serves public events and gatherings.
Cultural Square, supported by nearby museums and cultural centers, functions as a platform for civic engagement.

Architectural Identity and Structural Integration

The positioning of trade units aligns with the structural grid of the underground parking. Overhangs provide controlled daylighting and thermal comfort, enriching the user experience. The interplay of modularity, commercial activity, and public space results in a vibrant urban ecosystem that bridges Adıyaman’s historical legacy with its contemporary aspirations.
