Context and Natural Setting

Situated in the mountainous Kalbajar region, the project site stands out with its exceptional natural landscape, rich biodiversity, and abundant water resources. Its strategic location, in proximity to significant regions such as Kalbajar’s neighboring districts, has gained further importance in recent years with the implementation of major infrastructure projects. The primary design goal is to establish a modern and functional public space while safeguarding the ecological integrity and cultural heritage of Kalbajar.

Environmental and Climatic Design Considerations

Prevailing wind directions in the region naturally enhance ventilation, while the site’s solar orientation enables optimal building placement to maximize daylight and energy efficiency. The steep topography necessitates adaptation to natural slopes, guiding the spatial arrangement and circulation patterns.

Design Principles

  • North–South Orientation and Terrain-Adaptive Design
The sloped terrain has been a determining factor in the overall approach. All structures are oriented southwards to benefit from maximum natural light, increasing energy efficiency and outdoor comfort.
  • Slope-Responsive Spatial Design
The two dominant hills within the site define the project’s spatial logic. Circulation routes and building clusters weave between these landforms, integrating with the natural contours. Retaining walls at strategic points ensure stability and safety.
  • Architecture in Harmony with the Natural Silhouette
Building masses are arranged with sensitivity to the terrain, preserving the natural skyline and establishing a balanced relationship between architecture and landscape.

Functional Program

  • Sports and Health Square: Sports plaza with cafés and commercial units for social interaction.
  • Dance Square: A vibrant plaza at the theater entrance, hosting cultural and artistic events.
  • Festival Square: Restaurant area and an open social hub for celebrations.
  • Children’s Play Areas: Safe, green-integrated play spaces for different age groups.
  • Sports Facilities: Volleyball and basketball courts, catering units, and related commercial spaces.
  • Cultural Facilities: Amateur theatre, cinema, amphitheatre.
  • Other Facilities: Cable car station, administration building, open parking for 130 vehicles.

Circulation Strategy

Given the steep terrain, cycling and walking paths are placed along valley-facing slopes. A turning lane on the main road enables an “in-out” access system. Each functional zone has dedicated open parking areas to accommodate different usage needs.

Architectural Expression

  • 3D Vaults Inspired by Azerbaijani Heritage: Traditional Azerbaijani and Islamic arch forms are reinterpreted with modern technology to merge historical references with contemporary structural and aesthetic performance.
  • Use of Wood: Warm, natural materials complement the landscape and humanize the scale of the built environment.

Landscape Design

The landscape strategy integrates recreation with nature, offering:

  • Shaded seating areas surrounded by greenery.
  • Children’s playgrounds for different age groups.
  • Viewing terraces and observation decks with panoramic vistas.
  • Climbing areas and outdoor sports facilities.
  • Walking and cycling paths weaving through the forested slopes.
